With 45% of Western Mechanical Handling employees having completed an apprenticeship, WMH is a keen supporter of the modern apprenticeship scheme which enables young people to continue their education and gain valuable trade skills.
The majority of people within WMH who have completed an apprenticeship speak highly of this often overlooked route to training and development. “I have never been out of work” and “I wanted to get out and earn some money”, were two of the most common remarks. And it isn’t just those on the workshop floor who took this practical step from education to employment. At WMH some of our senior managers have worked their way up from apprentice to manager and now have a fully rounded knowledge of the complete manufacturing process and can relate to the challenges faced by their subordinates.
Apprenticeships are open to anyone who is 16 or over, living in England and not in full-time education. You can apply for an apprenticeship whilst you are still at school. Apprenticeships take up to 4 years to complete. Information about apprenticeships in general can be found at: https://www.gov.uk/apprenticeships-guide.
WMH has been a keen advocate of apprenticeships for many years and sees it as a valuable method of training people to meet the needs of modern dynamic business.
With the cost of further education increasing to the point where students are being saddled with huge debts before they begin their working lives, the modern apprenticeship enables young people to continue their education whilst being paid and gaining valuable relevant job training, learning practical skills passed down from people with many years’ experience in the role without running up huge debts.
WMH is keen to continue to train apprentices and details will be posted on our vacancies page as they become available.
