As production lines become increasingly automated, manufacturers benefit from higher throughput, improved efficiency, and reduced labour requirements. However, greater levels of automation can also create challenges when it comes to accessing equipment for routine cleaning, maintenance, and inspections.
One of the most effective ways to overcome these access issues is through the installation of bespoke access steps and walkways. Properly designed access structures enable personnel to move safely and efficiently around production equipment while minimising disruption to operations.
WMH recently completed the design and manufacture of a large stainless steel access walkway as part of a major bakery production line upgrade. The project was developed to provide safe access in and around three travelling oven feed systems, ensuring maintenance and cleaning teams could reach critical areas quickly and safely.
Designed specifically for the available space, the walkway was manufactured in bolted sections, allowing it to be transported easily and assembled around existing machinery within the factory. This approach minimised installation disruption while providing a robust, permanent access solution.
Hygienic Stainless Steel Construction
Constructed entirely from stainless steel, the walkway is ideally suited to hygienic wash-down environments commonly found within the food manufacturing industry. To further enhance food safety, the structure incorporates undertrays and walkway infill panels that prevent debris, tools, or cleaning residues from falling onto the production equipment below. This allows both the steps and walkway surfaces to be cleaned effectively without creating contamination risks for the conveyors and processing systems underneath.
Bespoke Design
The bespoke design also incorporates five flights of stairs, a change of floor level, two lockable access gates, and two vertical occasional-access ladders. To maximise operator safety, GRP anti-slip treads have been fitted to all stairways and ladder rungs, providing enhanced grip and reducing the risk of slips in wet or wash-down conditions. Every element was engineered in accordance with BS EN ISO 14122, ensuring compliance with recognised standards for the safety of machinery access systems.
Whether supporting new automation projects or upgrading existing production facilities, custom-designed access platforms and walkways play a vital role in maintaining safe, efficient, and hygienic manufacturing environments.
