WMH has recently designed, built and installed a new packing conveyor system for an international premium dessert manufacturer specialising in chilled, frozen and baked sweet products supplied to major retail brands.
The new manual packing line links the customer’s cake-cutting machine directly to its flow-wrapping operation, creating an efficient and ergonomic packing process. The system utilises a twin-conveyor arrangement that presents acetate trays to operators at an optimised working position. Operators then carefully pick and place pairs of cake slices into the trays before manually loading the filled packs into the flights of the flow wrapper.
Designed with operator comfort and productivity in mind, the conveyor system helps streamline the packing process while reducing unnecessary movement and strain during repetitive handling tasks.
The current operation remains largely manual, with operators responsible for de-nesting acetate trays, loading cake slices into the trays and transferring the completed packs into the flow wrapper. While this approach is well suited to the product’s delicate nature, the installation has been designed with future enhancements in mind.
Opportunities exist to introduce further automation, including automatic tray de-nesting and robotic pick-and-place handling of filled trays into the wrapper. However, the fragility and presentation requirements of the cake slices mean that a fully automated solution is neither practical nor desirable at this stage. The new conveyor system therefore provides the ideal balance between efficient manual handling and the potential for future automation as production requirements evolve.
